Martin Ritt collection, 1938-1990; (bulk 1957-1990).

Production files, television files, stage material, correspondence files, general files, and scrapbooks. Production files generally consist of scripts and production material for films directed by Ritt with a small amount of material relating to two films in which he acted and to unrealized projects. Television material consists largely of contracts and clippings relating to both produced and unrealized series and programs. Stage materials consist largely of clippings and contracts relating to plays which Ritt directed or in which he appeared. General files cover a variety of topics, including the Actors Studio and its running after the death of Lee Strasberg.

The Actors Studio was founded in October, 1947, by Cheryl Crawford, Elia Kazan and Robert Lewis. In 1948 Lee Strasberg joined the team and was the central teacher and figurehead until his death in 1982.
